What should you look for in a home lead test kit?

Yet Dr. Johnson-Arbor says that many kits are not entirely reliable and can offer false positives or false negatives.
Examples include the3M Lead Checkkit,D-Lead, and thestate of Massachusetts test kits.
If the swab turns red, lead is present: RED MEANS LEADTM, according to the manufacturer.

For example, for the EPA-approved 3M test, you should do the following:

Crush
Squeeze and crush points marked A and B, located on the barrel of the swab.
Rub
While squeezing gently, rub the swab on the test area for 30 seconds.
If the tip turns red or pink, lead is present.
